Sir Anthony Kenny was the Giant of Oxford University academic. He left the Catholic priesthood to pursue the study of philosophy to understand why people behave the way they do.
During his studies and subsequent service as a curate in Liverpool, he began to question core Catholic teachings. He struggled with the Aristotelian metaphysics underpinning transubstantiation and Thomas Aquinas's proofs for the existence of God.
Finding it intolerable to preach doctrines he no longer believed in, he left the priesthood in 1963. He chronicled this painful transition in his well-known autobiography, A Path from Rome.
Adopting Agnosticism: Kenny spent the rest of his life defining himself as an agnostic. In his book What I Believe, he argued that neither theism nor atheism possessed absolute certainty.
He died on August 3rd at age of 95.
